Apple-confirmed iPhone wallpaper sizes

Apple states display resolutions in its technical specifications. This table turns tall-screen specifications into the portrait convention used by image editors: width × height. The iPhone Duo rows keep Apple's natural inner- and outer-display orientation.

What size should an iPhone wallpaper be?

Use the model's display pixels as a practical final export size. The image may start larger, especially when you plan to crop, but the final file gains no visible detail by carrying far more pixels than the screen can show. Pixel dimensions matter; DPI metadata does not change how many screen pixels the wallpaper contains.

Orientation note: Apple often writes an all-screen iPhone as height-by-width—for example, 2622-by-1206. This guide writes the portrait wallpaper canvas as 1206 × 2622, width first.

Resolution and aspect ratio solve different problems

Resolution controls detail. Aspect ratio controls framing. A 3840 × 2160 image has many pixels, but its 16:9 landscape shape still needs a major crop to fill a tall iPhone. Most all-screen iPhones sit close to 19.5:9; the exact pixel ratios vary slightly. iPhone Duo is the important exception because both displays are much squarer.

Lock Screen, Home Screen, and safe areas

There is no single Apple-published “safe-area rectangle” for wallpaper artwork. The Lock Screen changes with clock style, widgets, notifications, Depth Effect, and spatial effects. The Home Screen adds icons, widgets, the dock, and legibility treatments. Treat every online overlay—including this site's preview—as a composition guide rather than a hardware specification.

• Keep faces, logos, and essential text away from the top clock and the bottom controls.
• Leave breathing room around the Dynamic Island or notch instead of framing a subject against it.
• Use a quieter crop or a softened version for the Home Screen so app labels remain readable.
• Inspect Apple's real preview before tapping Done. The phone owns the final crop.

Display pixels, screenshots, and older Plus models

The table uses Apple's physical display resolution because it provides one consistent, manufacturer-sourced definition. A screenshot is still the best field check: it reflects the phone's current iOS rendering canvas and any display mode in use.

iPhone 6 Plus, 6s Plus, 7 Plus, and 8 Plus deserve a special note. Apple lists a 1080 × 1920 panel, while UIKit historically rendered at a 3× scale and sampled that content down to the physical screen. A screenshot or design workflow can therefore expose a larger rendered canvas. For an ordinary wallpaper, start with the listed panel pixels; for pixel-sensitive overlays, match a screenshot taken on the target phone.

Make a correctly sized iPhone wallpaper

1. Confirm the model. On iPhone, open Settings → General → About and read Model Name. Apple also documents how to identify a device from its model number.
2. Choose the matching row. Copy the portrait width and height. For iPhone Duo, choose the inner or outer display and plan two exports if both matter.
3. Match the composition. Use Fill for an edge-to-edge crop, Fit to preserve the whole image, or Blur fill to preserve the image over a full-screen background.
4. Preview both destinations. Protect the clock on the Lock Screen and legibility behind apps on the Home Screen.
5. Export and test. Set the file on the actual phone, inspect Apple's preview, and revise the crop if iOS adds zoom or an effect.
